Why should my pet see a specialist?
A vet specialist is a vet with additional training and board-certification in a specific field, such as internal medicine. Your pet should see a specialist for many of the same reasons you yourself might see a specialist. Just like people, pets can develop a variety of serious illnesses in which the skilled expertise of an experienced board-certified specialist can be invaluable. Should your pet exhibit unusual or nonspecific symptoms, or not be responding to therapy, a specialist can often target the problem more quickly and then determine the most effective course of action, often bypassing tests that do not need to be performed. In addition, a specialist will generally possess a high level of expertise and skill in safely performing a number of different tests and procedures. Just as you would be referred by your own family doctor to a specialist for additional testing or a special procedure, such as an ultrasound or a biopsy, your pet will similarly benefit from the additional skills and knowledge offered by a veterinary specialist. Unlike human medicine in which insurance companies limit the referral process, a referral from your vet is not mandatory to schedule an appointment with us. |

Tidewater Veterinary Internal Medicine is a small animal specialist practice dedicated to diagnosing and treating pets with difficult and complex problems involving their internal organ systems. Routine preventive services, such as vaccinations or dental cleanings, are not offered. Most of our patients do not have a clear diagnosis or treatment plan before they are evaluated. As a specialist dealing with internal medicine problems, Dr. Kremer can often offer a greater level of understanding and insight into the problem at hand, and possesses the skills to deal with the problem most effectively. We have advanced diagnostic capabilities and are committed to providing our patients with the best specialist veterinary care in eastern Virginia. |
